Day 35: March 29th
This is the first day of what we call Holy Week. For many of our children they are calling this week Spring Break. During Holy Week we will follow Jesus through the last few days and hours of His life. Then on Sunday we will celebrate His resurrection.
As we go through this final week there are going to be times when it is hard to understand all that is happening and why it happened, especially for children. Listen to their questions and hear their stories as they recount what they saw or heard. It is important for them to know that although this is a sad week it is a happy one too. Keep them looking towards Easter but help them to understand there is a lot that had to happen before that day could.
Palm Sunday = the entrance into Jerusalem
Holy Thursday = institution of Communion and betrayal by Judas
Good Friday -= the arrest, trial, crucifixion, death, and burial of Jesus
Holy Saturday = the Sabbath on which Jesus rested in the grave
Matthew 19:14
Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

Easter Eggs
Come join us today for the Easter Egg Hunt out at the Andover campus.
The history of the Easter Egg is one that many debate. But Easter just doesn’t seem complete without the Easter Egg. It was originally a secular idea. The first colored egg was in China during 1000 B.C. The tradition of hiding the eggs came in Europe later. The tradition says that a lady would hide the eggs in tall grass telling children that a bunny left them for them to find. The Easter bunny is still visiting children today.
Today the colorful eggs remind us of the new life that comes with spring. It reminds us also that we have new life in Christ.
As you see eggs or even decorate some eggs yourself think about the new life that is growing outside and the new life that is growing inside of you as you grow in your knowledge of God.
For some extra fun, if you are dying your eggs wrap a variety of rubber bands around them and dip into the die. If you’re very adventurous you can even unwrap them after they dry and wrap them again to die them another color in other spots.
Sunday
Many superheroes like Superman and Superwoman have something in common. Do you know what it is? Many of them wear a cape. Their cape has many uses. It can protect them from bullets. It can keep them warm when it is cold or it can keep them dry when it rains. It can help them fly through the air or leap tall buildings in a single bound. Have you ever pretended that you were Superman or Superwoman? When I was a child, I used to tie a cape around my neck and pretend that I was Superman flying through the air. You probably have done that too.
In the day when Jesus lived, many people wore a garment called a cloak. It was a loose outer garment similar to a cape and, like the Superheroes' cape, it served many purposes. It provided them protection against the harsh winds and blowing sand in the desert. It also provided protection from the hot desert sun. In our Bible lesson today, we will see a very unusual way the people used their cloaks.
Jesus and his disciples were walking toward Jerusalem and had stopped near a small village called Bethphage. Jesus sent two of his disciples to go on ahead into the village. He told them that when they got there, they would find a donkey and her colt which they were to bring back to him. Of course the disciples were a bit concerned because they imagined that these animals might belong to someone who might not appreciate having their animals taken. Jesus simply told them, "Tell them that the Lord needs them and they will let you have them." So the disciples went into town and sure enough, there was a donkey and her colt. They grabbed them and as they were leaving, someone asked why they were taking the animals. They answered, "It is for the Lord." And the people let them take them just as Jesus had said they would. When they arrived back at the camp, the disciples took their cloaks and put them on the donkey to make a nice soft seat for Jesus. Jesus got on the donkey and headed toward Jerusalem.
When Jesus arrived in Jerusalem, a very large crowd gathered to welcome him. Some of them spread their cloaks on the road for Jesus to ride on, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. Why would they do that? They were treating Jesus like a king!
The Bible tells us that the crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted:
"Hosanna to the Son of David!"
"Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!"
"Hosanna in the highest heaven!"
The people greeted Jesus as a King that day. Today, Jesus wants to be your King -- and he will be if you will allow him to come into your heart and rule over your life. Lay down your cloak to greet your King as he comes to you in love.

Lent (sorry this one is late)
Day 31: March 24th
The legend of the dogwood
“In Jesus' time, the dogwood grew
To a stately size and a lovely hue.
'Twas strong and firm it's branches interwoven
For the cross of Christ its timbers were chosen.
Seeing the distress at this use of their wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
"Never again shall the dogwood grow
Large enough to be used so.
Slender and twisted, it shall be
With blossoms like the cross for all to see.
As blood stains the petals marked in brown
The blossom's center wears a thorny crown.
All who see it will remember Me
Crucified on a cross from the dogwood tree.
Cherished and protected, this tree shall be
A reminder to all of my agony."
There is no biblical basis for this story but it is a nice poem to remind us of something we don’t usually think about which is the Cross itself. Have you ever gotten a splitter? They call it the old rugged cross for a reason. When they hung someone on a cross it was two pieces of wood that were not smooth. They were full of splitters and would have been painful to lean up against.
As we get one day closer to Easter think about the cross that Jesus bore for us and how He said for us to take up our cross and follow him. Knowing that the cross isn’t pretty, was heavy, and full of rough spots how does that make you feel?
Day 32: March 25th
The Disciples
While we have been taking this journey towards Easter we are following in the footsteps of many men and women. One group of those men and women are important to note and that are those are the first 12 disciples that followed Jesus closely.
Think about their journey. It started out with Jesus coming and asking them to follow Him. Some of them had expectations that they followed Him with. Some just wanted to learn more about God. As Jesus taught the disciples were the ones who continually asked Jesus to explain what He was saying. They wanted more information. They wanted to dig deeper into the words of Jesus was speaking.
As we go through our journey to Easter. There are a lot of things we can learn from those who have gone before us. Their perseverance and determination, they spent almost every moment with Jesus, they had their moments of failures, and they learned from Jesus and their failures.
What else can we learn from the disciples of Jesus?

Day 33: March 26th
Hallelujah!
George Fredrick Handel is one of the greatest composers that ever lived. The king of England asked Handel to write something for the Easter Season from a set of verses in the Bible. That is exactly what Handel did when he wrote the Messiah. It means “he who is an unexpected savior.” One of the best known works from this score is “The Hallelujah Chorus.” When Handel performed his chorus to the king of England the king was very moved. In fact when it got to “The Hallelujah Chorus” he stood up. No one remains seated when the king stands so everyone in the audience stood up. From that day on whenever “The Hallelujah Chorus” is sung people stand to sing it.
A small piece of “The Hallelujah Chorus”
The kingdom of this world;
is become
the kingdom of our Lord,
and of His Christ
and of His Christ
And He shall reign for ever and ever
And he shall reign forever and ever
And he shall reign forever and ever
And he shall reign forever and ever
King of kings forever and ever hallelujah hallelujah

Day 29: March 22nd
Our Journey
As we are journeying to Easter, we should pause for a moment and see those that have traveled before us. There are many people of God who have traveled. There are many different travels recorded in the Bible. But almost all of those journeys start with God saying for them to “go.” Take Abraham for example, God told him to “go from your country and I will show you where to go.” And that is just what he did, he left his home and went to where God told him to go. Moses was told to go speak to Pharaoh and God told Moses to say “let my people go.” That is what they did starting a long journey in the dessert and finally to the promise land. Jesus said to the disciples to come with me and then He said to them and to us to “go out and make disciples.”
Read: Luke 2:41-51
John 24:13-35
Acts 9:1-9
Acts 27:1-44
Day 30: March 23rd
Offering
An offering is giving something back to God for all of the things that He has done for us. It is giving back some of what He has given us.
As we are rounding some of the last corners of our journey we are going to focus on what was happening during that time. Offerings looked a lot different for people back in Jesus’ day. They would sacrifice (kill for God) animals for their sins. If you go back into the Old Testament God laid out strict guidelines for the people of God. They were to do certain ceremonies and they were to perform special rituals in order to get their sins forgiven.
It was around the time when Jesus was being crucified that people were coming to the city for one of these ceremonies. If you want to read more about that ceremony and the offerings read the Book of Leviticus.
A few years ago Ray Boltz wrote a song about this called “Watch the Lamb”
Walking on the road to Jerusalem,
The time had come to sacrifice again,
My two small sons, They walk beside me on the road,
The reason that they came
was to watch the lamb. Daddy, daddy, What will see there, There's so much that we don't understand,
So I told them of Moses and father Abraham,
Then I said dear children watch the lamb,
There will be so many in Jerusalem today,
We must be sure the lamb doesn't run away,
And I told them of Moses and father Abraham,
Then I said dear children watch the lamb.
When we reached the city, I knew something must be wrong, There were no joyful worshipers,
No joyful worship songs, I stood there with my children in the midst of angry men,
Then I heard the crowd cry out
Crucify Him.
We tried to leave the city but we could not get away,
Forced to play in this drama a part I did not wish to play, Why upon this day were men condemned to die, Why were we standing here, Where soon they would pass by. I looked and said, even now they come, The first one cried for mercy,
The people gave him none, The second one was violent, He was arrogant and loud, I still here his angry voice screaming at the crowd,
Then someone said there's Jesus, I scarce believed my eyes, A man so badly beaten, He barely looked alive, Blood poured from His body,
From the forms upon His brow, Running down the cross, Falling to the ground. I watched Him as He struggled, I watched Him as He fell, The cross came down upon His back, The crowd began to yell,
In that moment I felt such agony, In that moment I felt such loss, Till a Roman soldier grabbed my arm
and screamed, you, carry His cross. At first I tried to resist him, Then his hand reached for his cross,
So I knelt and took the cross from the Lord, I placed it on my shoulder, And started down the street, The blood that he'd been shedding was running down my cheek. They led us to Golgotha, They drove nails
deep in His feet and hands, Yet upon the cross I heard Him pray Father, forgive them. Oh, never have I seen such love in any other eyes, Into thy hands I commit my spirit He prayed and the He died, I stood for what seemed like years, I'd lost all sense of time
until I felt to tiny hands holding tight to mine, The children stood there weeping, I heard the oldest say,
Father please forgive us, the lamb ran away. Daddy, daddy, What have we seen here, There's so much
that we don't understand, So I took them in my arms,
And we turned and faced the cross, Then I said dear children watch the lamb.

Lent... Weekend Edition...
Day 28: March 20th
“Are we there yet?”
Wow what a journey we have been on these past month. Time is just flying by. Today I want you to think about a trip that you have taken. One that took what seemed like forever to you. Sometimes Lent seems like it will never end, although it is only 40 days sometimes it feels a lot longer than that. As we round into the last couple of weeks of Lent this is when the temptation to put the devotions aside get really strong. The temptation to ask “are we there yet?” Or “do we have to do another day of this?” We all fall into those moments where we are wondering if we are ever going to reach our destination. Some of us may wonder if the journey is worth it. Some of us have already given into temptation. No matter where you find yourself on this Saturday remember that God wants to see us grow. That growth doesn’t just happen during the season of Lent but all throughout the year. It is a continual journey that you started the day you accepted Christ into your life.
Be blessed as you continue on your journey through Lent.
Sunday
It is the start of another week and we are getting closer to Easter. Since today is Sunday I thought I would do something a little different. I am going to name of the top ten reasons you should not miss church today.
10. It doesn’t cost anything to get in.
9. It’s a good place to meet new friends and visit with the old ones
8. There isn’t much on TV on Sunday mornings
7. You look very nice in your Sunday best
6. They might serve doughnuts in Sunday School
5. Kevin has the choir sing some pretty amazing songs
4. The kids worship bulletin usually has a fun game or two in it
3. You wouldn’t get a stump your parents question if you didn’t come
2. It is a great place to think, pray and to make awesome crafts
1. You might miss out on something that is really important!

Serving Others
There are many ways that we can serve or help others. Jesus says in the Bible that we are to look after one another. To help each other out when needed. He wants us to care for the poor and for the sick.
List out the ways that the church serves the community:

the missed day
Day 25: March 17th
Joy
Have you ever been really sad? Have you ever cried? What helped you be happy again? Was it a kind word from a friend? Was it spending time having fun?
Some people say that in time all wounds heal. If we give God a chance He will turn our sadness into joy. However, that means that we have to hand over to Him all that hurts us. All the things that break our hearts. We have to allow God to transform our sorrow into new life.
Read Psalm 126:4-6
I'm sorry I missed Wednesday... Happy St. Patrick's Day! I find it interesting that I wrote these in January and as I read through them now they are so fitting to what is happening in my life. I hope that is the same for you. I missed Wednesday because I was saying goodbye to a dear friend who passed away on Saturday night. This lady was someone who was a prayer warrior for her family and friends. She will be greatly missed and I pray that the church in Lebanon will find joy through this dark time.

Freedom
Read Isaiah 61:1-2
Jesus came to mend the broken. He came to set all of those who are imprisoned free. That doesn’t mean that Jesus is going to go to the prisons and allow those who have done crimes free. It means that He is going to set us free and mend our broken souls. We are the broken and the imprisoned. We are broken because of the sins that we do. Each time we sin, we add a little more dirt onto our souls. Our punishment for sin is death. But, Jesus came to save us. He came and broke the bondage of sin and death so that way we could be free. He came so that way we could live with him forever in Heaven.
“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." Galatians 5:1

Day 24: March 16th
Glimpse
There are small moments when God all of a sudden reminds us that he is here. Some call those God moments. It is like catching a glimpse of the sunset after a long day and getting lost in the colors. It is feeling the cool wind on your back on a very hot summers day. It is those moments when you feel really lonely and all of a sudden a warm happy thought comes to mind. God is everywhere and there are times when we get a glimpse of Him through our earthly eyes.
What are some God moments you have had lately?

Friendship
The movie ““Jungle Book” tells the story of a boy, Mowgli, who lives in the jungle among the animals. He is being taken back to the human village and along the way he meets many very interesting characters. There's mad King Louie of the Apes and a lovable, happy-go-lucky bear named Baloo. He even meets a group of vultures who pledge their friendship in a song called "That's What Friends Are For." The words of the song go like this:
We're your friends
We're your friends
We're your friends to the bitter end
When you're alone
Who comes around
To pluck you up
When you are down
And when you're outside, looking in
Who's there to open the door?
That's what friends are for!
Do you have a friend who is always there for you? One who cheers you up when you're feeling sad. One who stands by you no matter what. We could all use a friend like that, couldn't we?
There was a man named Lazarus who lived in Bethany with his two sisters, Mary and Martha. They knew Jesus and were his good friends. One day, Lazarus became sick. His sisters sent word to Jesus saying, "Lord, your dear friend Lazarus is very sick." But Jesus was in another town and didn't come right away.
When Jesus finally arrived in Bethany, Martha ran to meet Jesus and told him that Lazarus had been dead for four days. "If only you had been here, my brother would not have died."
Jesus answered, "Your brother will rise again. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever lives and believes in me will never die."
So Martha went back and got her sister Mary and they took Jesus to show him the place where Lazarus was buried. When he arrived at the tomb, Jesus told them to roll away the stone that covered the entrance. He prayed to his Father and then he called in a loud voice, "Lazarus come out!" Do you know what happened? Even though he had been dead for four days, Lazarus walked out of the tomb! He wasn't dead -- he wasn't even sick!
Wow! How would you like to have a friend like that? Well, you do. Jesus loves you just as he loved Lazarus and he wants to be your friend. He'll pick you up when you are down. He'll be with you to the bitter end. After all, that's what friends are for.

He Loves Me
Look at the picture above. Can you find the Trinity? What about this pictures shows you that God loves you?
As I was re reading this lesson and posting it I found out that a good friend of mine passed away. I was thinking of the celebration that is happening in Heaven as they welcomed this faithful servant. In the picture Jesus is smiling. I think that is what He is doing today as He greets Margret.

Day 22: March 13th
God Loves Us
One of my favorite Bible verses begins, "For God so loved the world." I was thinking about that verse and wondering -- just how great is God's love and how could we measure it? This morning I brought several things that we often use in measuring other things. I thought they might help us measure God's love.
Sometimes we use a measuring cup to measure things. If I were making some cookies, I would use a measuring cup to make sure that I put in exactly the right amount of flour, sugar, and milk. I wonder if we might use a measuring cup to measure God's love? The Bible says, "The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want....my cup runneth over." (Psalm 23:1,5) Well, if our cup runs over with God's love, I don't guess we could use a measuring cup to measure it.
If we were building something, we might use a tape measure to measure the length, width, and height of different things. I wonder if we might use a tape measure to measure God's love? The Bible tells us that God's love is higher than the heavens. (Psalm 108:4) If God's love is higher than the heavens, I don't think we could use a tape measure to measure it, could we?
We use a watch to measure time. There will probably be some people here this morning who will use their watch to measure how long the pastor's sermon lasts. I wonder if we could use a watch to measure how long God's love will last. The Bible tells us that God's love is from everlasting to everlasting. (Psalm 103:17) Wow! If God's love is from everlasting to everlasting, I don't guess we could measure it with a watch.
"For God so loved the world, that he gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life." How do you measure a love like that? We can't measure it -- we don't need to -- but we do need to experience it.
My prayer for you today is, "That you may understand how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love really is. May you experience it, though it is so great you will never fully understand it." (Ephesians 3:18-19)

More Like Jesus
A few years ago Keith Greene wrote a song titled “I Want to be more like Jesus”
“As each day passes by, I feel my love run dry. I get so weary, worn, And tossed around in the storm. Well I’m blind to all his needs, And I’m tired of planting seeds. I seem to have a wealth, Of so many thoughts about myself. I want to, I need to, be more like Jesus. I want to, I need to, be more like him. Our father’s will was done, By giving us his son, Who paid the highest cost, To point us to the cross. And when I think of him, Taking on the whole world’s sin, I take one look at me, Compared to what I’m called to be. I want to, I need to, be more like Jesus. I want to, I need to, be more like him. Remember, there’s no greater love, Then to lay down your life for a friend. The end of all my prayers, Is to care like my lord cares. My one and only goal, His image in my soul. Yes my weakness is revealed, When by his stripes I’m healed. He’s faithful and he’s true, To complete the work he begins in you.”
We should strive to be more like Jesus every day. Share with each other a favorite story about Jesus. Then share what you plan on doing to be more like Jesus today.

Day 20: March 11th
Baptism
The United Methodist Book of Worship says that through the Sacrament of Baptism we are initiated into Christ’s holy Church. We are incorporated into God’s might acts of salvation and given new birth through water and the Spirit.
Prayer:
Eternal Father:
When nothing existed but chaos,
you swept across the dark waters
and brought forth light.
In the days of Noah
you saved those on the ark through water.
After the flood you set in the clouds a rainbow.
When you saw your people as slaves in Egypt,
you led them to freedom through the sea.
Their children you brought through the Jordan
to the land which you promised.
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
Tell of God’s mercy each day.
In the fullness of time you sent Jesus,
nurtured in the water of a womb.
He was baptized by John and anointed by your Spirit.
He called his disciples
to share in the baptism of his death and resurrection
and to make disciples of all nations.
Declare his works to the nations,
his glory among all the people.
Pour out your Holy Spirit,
to bless this gift of water and those who receive it,
to wash away their sin
and clothe them in righteousness
throughout their lives,
that, dying and being raised with Christ,
they may share in his final victory.
All praise to you, Eternal Father,
through your Son Jesus Christ,
who with you and the Holy Spirit
lives and reigns for ever. Amen.
Share your Baptism stories with each other.

Lent and forgiveness...
Day 19: March 10th
Forgiveness
“When people hurt us, we often keep our distance from them. Or worse, we try to get back at them. We hardly ever do something nice for them in return! Yet God does just that when he forgives our sins. God doesn’t always do what makes sense to us. God does what’s loving and merciful instead, even when we do something wrong. We didn’t earn his love, but God gives it to us freely anyway. God gave us Jesus as well, who gave us his whole life – not because we deserved it, but because we needed it.
God wants us forgive one another, just as God forgives us. Think about somebody you need to forgive. Can you ask God for help to forgive that person?” – Karla Manternach

Lent Reader....
Day 18: March 9th
Our Bodies
God wants us to take care of ourselves. He wants us to keep our bodies in good condition. That means that we need to eat what is good and exercise. During Lent it is traditionally when people fast. To eat less and to focus on God more. It helps us to remember that there are some people in this world that do not have food. They don’t have the foods to help keep a balanced diet. As a family go through your pantry and pick out some things to donate to the local pantry.

Lent for the next few days
Day 13: March 3rd
Mid Week Check
It is the middle of the week and we have been on this journey to Lent for a while now. How are we doing? Do you have questions? Have you learned anything new of the last 13 days?
Share with each other some of your thoughts of the last 13 days. Ask children to share their questions. Things that they are wanting to know. If they ask a question that, you don’t know the answer to or don’t know where to find the answer to. Write it down and bring it to Bekah.
Day 14: March 4th
Honor God
What does it mean to honor God with all that we do?
How can we honor God in our daily lives?
In everything we do we should be praising God and honoring Him with our words and actions. We are set apart by God, we are holy. “Set apart for the services of God. Be ye holy, for I am holy. It says, we are holy because we are the temple of God(1 Cor. 3:17).”
Read Romans 12:1-2
Day 15: March 5th
Nothing Gets in His Way
No matter what God will always love us. We are the ones that move not God. When Jesus came into the world, He brought a deeper love that we had ever seen before. Moreover, that love has never left us, nor will it ever leave us. It holds on to us tight and no matter how hard we push away, it will never let go.
How to show each other we love them:
64 Ways to Say "I Love You":
1. Don't compare them to anyone.
2. Be courteous at all times.
3. Embrace the present moments without fear or guilt.
4. Live by the Golden Rule (Do unto others as you would have them do unto you).
5. Give your full attention when talking.
6. Become their biggest fan and cheerleader!
7. Laugh about kids quotes on love or events.
8. Talk about your day during mealtimes.
9. Read books aloud together.

Day 16: March 6th
Promise
God never breaks his promises. When He says He is going to do something He means it. Abraham trusted God and even when he got a little impatient about God’s timing, he waited. God works on His schedule not ours. However, God does keep his promises. God promised Abraham that countless people, as many as the stars in the sky, would come after him. God did just that. Around the world today, there are believers that cover the entire earth. We are among them. We are some of the people of God’s promise to Abraham!

Peace Be Still
I love the story of Jesus calming the storm. This story shows us that Jesus has the power over everything. He can with calm the storms in our lives. He has the power to also bring storms into our lives to draw us back to Him.
Read the story in the 4th Chapter of Mark about Jesus calming the storm. What are some storms that God has calmed in your life? Do you trust Him to be there in all the storms in your life?
“He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" Then the wind died down and it was completely calm. He said to his disciples, "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?"”
